Title | Our Story

Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.

Ryan and I met freshman year of college at the University of Kansas in 2010. We lived in the same dorm, Templin hall, on the same floor (T3) and started hanging out doing group activities that fall. In spring of 2014 we went on our first official date to Free State Brewing co. and have been dating ever since!

When did you know he / she was the one? Was there something he / she did?

Taylor – I think the first time I knew Ryan was “the one” was when we were hanging out in his dorm room and he started playing one of my favorite Death Cab for Cutie songs on the piano. From that moment it was just like something clicked.

Ryan – I remember I was an intern at the National Institutes of Health for a summer and we had recently started officially dating. We had actually seen each other so often previously that the feeling of not seeing her for several weeks while I was in DC and she in Lawrence  came as a shock and a eureka moment. I decided that if it were so difficult to be apart, then I wanted to stay with her forever.

What is the most memorable date you’ve ever had?

Scuba diving in Hawaii. Taylor had never been scuba diving before and I had gotten certified several years prior. As we were boating out to the dive site, I was nervous, Taylor was terrified. But our instructor was amazing and as we made it into the water, we saw sea turtles swimming past and ended up veering past this underwater ravine, watching as swirling rainbow of fish bubbled up from the ocean floor around us.

Tell us about the proposal (did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning? How did you feel? Nervous, excited, freaking out?)

Ryan – We had come back from Hawaii and I took Taylor back to Lawrence. We walked through the Campanile, and I proposed as we watched the sun setting over the campus hills. We then had dinner at the restaurant at which we had our first date.

Taylor – I definitely knew it was coming because we went ring shopping together and I am the absolute worst person to surprise. It was so sweet that we were able to have it at the campanile on the campus where we met. A funny fact about the engagement is immediately after it happened I texted my mom to share the news and my phone died so I left her in suspense for a solid 2 hours. Ryan’s phone was also dead from a day of traveling so we had to go buy a phone charger later that evening to call everyone and tell them as we drove back to KC!

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.

Taylor – my favorite thing about Ryan is his genuine smile. Anytime I am having a rough day I know I am able to come home and instantly his grin will start to put me in a better mood.

Ryan – I love how her breathing changes any time she focuses intensely on something (usually cooking). She hates it but it makes me smile.

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does

Taylor – He has to immediately unpack when we get back from a trip. As soon as he walks in the door he begins unpacking his bag and hanging clothes back in the closet or putting them into the laundry. Mine on the other hand sits on the floor of the bedroom for a few weeks…

Ryan – Boston driving is quite terrible and often terrifying. When I’m driving and make sudden stops, Taylors right foot stomps down on the imaginary pedal beneath her feet.
